BREAKING: ALXnow reports massive power outage in Alexandria


Thousands of Alexandria residents are in darkness on Friday night due to a power outage.

At 8 p.m., the utility company is reporting 12,750 customers without electricity. By 8:20 p.m., that number had dropped to 6,846.

More than 3,000 customers are without electricity in parts of Arlington around the Alexandria border.

Affected neighborhoods include Dale Ray, Potomac Yard and Fairlington. Some have reported power flirting.

According to Dominion’s website, power restoration estimates are currently between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. The cause of the outage was a faulty circuit in the substation, a company spokesperson said.

Updated at 9:30 p.m. – Alexandria police are reminding residents to treat dark traffic signals like four-way stops.

“Dominion Power has recorded a major impact of electricity in the city of Alexandria.” APDA said. “This outage has caused many intersections without electricity. Treat all powerless intersections as a four-way stop. Please be careful and drive safely. ”

Updated at 9:15 p.m. – Power was soon restored and installed, but according to a Dominion spokesman, it is back off. A number of residents around the city said on Twitter that they are still without power.
