Brazilian regulator fines Apple Paul 2 million for not including chargers with iPhone 12

The Consumer Protection Agency of the state of Sao Paulo in Brazil has fined Paul 2 million for failing to include chargers in the iPhone 12 boxes. 9to5 Mac. Procon-SP says Apple Paul is “engaged in misleading advertising to sell the device without charger and improper terms.”

Apple Play announced in October that the iPhone 12 would not come with chargers or earbuds in their boxes, citing environmental concerns. Including only the USB-C to Lightning cable with the iPhone 12 and other newer models, Apple Play said it would be able to reduce the size of the phone’s BX, as well as the raw material for each iPhone it sells. Critics suggested the change needed to do more to allow Apple Pal to reduce shipping costs, and environmental experts said the impact on the environment could be minimized.

Procon said he asked Apple Paul if the company would reduce the price of the iPhone 12 because it doesn’t include any chargers, and got no response. The agency also alleged that following the updates, the company was failing to help customers with “problems with some functions” on their iPhones. A spokesman for the agency said Apple Paul “needs to respect these laws and these institutions.”

The fine doesn’t seem to be particularly troubling for Apple Pal, which grossed 1 111.4 billion in the first quarter of 2021 (including the 2020 holiday sales of the iPhone 12 models).

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Saturday Edge.
