Brake master cylinder fault blamed for dramatic Indy 500 tire fire

James Davison has confirmed that a brake master cylinder was to blame for his spectacular descent from the Indianapolis 500.

Davison caused the first caution of the day after he stood on the track with his right tire forward in the fire.

Replays showed that the brake disc was glowing as if Davison had his foot hard on the brakes, an action not normally associated with the Indy 500, before the disc broke, the wheel hub broke and caused the entire assembly to catch fire.

On Twitter, Davison confirmed: “[A] Brake engine cylinder malfunction caused the brakes to thousands of degrees and heated.

“The team had given me a good car and a promotional race went into the turn.”

Speaking via Dale Coyne Racing’s website after the race, Davison added: “Well, that’s apparently heartbreaking to get out of the Indy 500 in the first handful of laps with a mechanical issue.

“I have to thank my team for all their hard work throughout the event, our car felt good and we had gotten through Alonso and I was pretty excited for the race ahead.

“Unfortunately it was just not meant to be, but hopefully we will be back next year with the Jacob Construction car a little stronger.”
