Boy seriously injured in Chicago highway shooting


A 10-month-old girl was hit in the shoulder by a bullet on a Chicago highway Monday morning, seriously injuring her.

Ny’ori Askew was in the back seat of a vehicle when she was shot on the Bishop Ford Expressway on the south side of the city, according to reports.

Her 17-year-old mother was in the front seat, Fox 32 Chicago reported. A 21-year-old man was behind the wheel. He is reportedly the mother’s boyfriend.

“This is not necessary,” Ny’ori’s great-aunt Tiara Smothers told reporters at the hospital. “She hasn’t even done 1 yet.”

“It is ridiculous that we have to ask someone to show up to shoot a baby,” he said. “You all should stop the violence.”

Smothers was with community activist Christopher Scott from an anti-violence group called I’m Telling, Don’t Shoot.

Scott said he wanted the shooter to know that “we are looking for you and we are putting $ 10,000 for your arrest,” according to the station.

In the past two months, eight children under the age of 5 were shot in Chicago, the station reported.

Illinois state police are handling the investigation of the Ny’ori shooting.

“Preliminary reports indicated that the victim was traveling on the highway at the scene when a single shot was heard,” police said.

They said there were 65 shootings on the Chicago-area freeways this year, almost double the number of shootings during the same period last year.
