The Boston Red Sox traded Brandon Workman and Heath Hembree to the Philadelphia Phillies during their game Friday, creating two open spots on the 28-man active roster.
Boston returned to left pitcher Jeffrey Springs and right-handed pitcher Robert Stock of their alternative site, Triple-A Pawtucket, on Saturday to take those two roster spots.
Springs has struggled in four relief outings for Boston this year. He placed a 15.43 ERA (4 ⅔ innings, eight earned runs), 7.46 FIP and 2.57 WHIP. He has six strikeouts and two walks.
Stock was able to allow one unearned run, two hits and three walks, while hitting three in 1 ⅓ innings during his only major league performance this season vs. Tampa Bay on Aug. 11 at Fenway Park. Boston demanded his July 26 exemption from the Phillies.
Stock crashes hard, reaching 100 mph during simulated games in Pawtucket. He threw 26 fast-seam balls against the Rays, averaging 97.1 mph (per Statcast).
“I know he has big bikes,” pitching coach Dave Bush said before Stock is only for Boston this year. ‘He has great things. He has had some success in the past. And he has also had times where he has not been. I believe there is also some divorce history. But from what I’ve heard the last few weeks, he’s been really good at it. Velo is up. Stuff is good. And he has some first-class experience. That he is a boy we can bring in and put in right away. ”
The Red Sox got pitchers Nick Pivetta and Connor Seabold for Workman and Hembree. Both will report to Pawtucket.
