“We will then arrange trade with the EU, like Australia,” Jones added. “I want to make it very clear that, as we have said from the beginning, it will be a good outcome for the UK, as a government we are preparing, at our borders and ports, to be ready for it.”
He also reiterated his call for the European Union to offer trade equal to that of Canada. The European Union has faced, however, such a deal, given the UK’s geographical proximity and its close ties with the group.
“Even at this final stage, I would be happy if the EU is ready to reconsider and agree to its current position.” Said John. “But we cannot and will not compromise on the fundamental issues of what it means to be an independent country to get it.”
Neither the European Union nor the UK wants to provide state aid or fisheries, as the two biggest sticking issues prevent them from signing deals, as future relationship negotiations have created a final hurdle. The first round of talks in Brussels ended with almost no progress, with pessimism on both sides of the channel.
