Boeing 747 program comes to an end

Boeing will reportedly stop making 747 Jumbo Jets forever, after they complete the last of the 15 aircraft currently in order.

The final 747 is now expected to go out of line in the next two years or so, after which the type will have been in production for more than five decades.

Only 15 B747 are in order

Boeing has 15 unfinished orders to date, all B747-8 freighters. United Parcel Service (UPS) has 12 of these.

The Boeing 747 is likely to remain in the skies for decades, as it has become increasingly popular with cargo airlines. Three carriers, Air China, Korean Air and Lufthansa, operate the latest B747-8 passenger models.

Boeing’s “Queen of the Skies” debuted in 1970, a bet that paid off and transformed travel, but nearly bankrupt the company. The Boeing 747 has accumulated 1,571 orders over the decades, second only to wide-body aircraft by the Boeing 777.
