Body found during search for Glee Star Naya Rivera in Piru Lake

Update 07/13/20 1:57 pm ET: The Ventura County Sheriff’s Office recovered a body during its continued search for Naya Rivera on Monday morning. The bureau announced the discovery on social media just after ET noon Monday, writing: “A body has been found in Lake Piru this morning. The recovery is in progress.” A press conference on the matter is scheduled for 2 pm PT.

The search for Rivera’s body continued throughout the weekend, as the department regularly shared information about his recovery effort and discouraged the public from trying to conduct their own searches.

Update 7/9/20 3:05 pm ET: Ventura County Sheriff’s Office officials are now calling for the search for the missing Joy Naya Rivera star in a recovery effort, rather than a search and rescue.

“That has not changed anything, and the efforts we are making to locate her,” Ventura County Sheriff’s Deputy Chris Dyer told CBSN Los Angeles. “It somehow changes the title in a way. We assume an accident happened, and we assume that he drowned in the lake.”

Previously at 8:43 am ET: Glee star Naya Rivera went missing after her 4-year-old son was found alone in a boat Wednesday night at Lake Piru in Ventura County, California. Ventura County Sheriff’s Department Captain Eric Buschow said Los Angeles Times Rivera, 33, rented the boat around 1 pm Pacific time to go swimming with her son, but then the boy was found sleeping alone in the boat by others in the lake. Authorities were able to confirm Rivera’s identity because his wallet, with identification, was still on the ship.

“We believe she got into the water and we have been unable to locate her,” Buschow said Wednesday. “So this could be a case of drowning.” Buschow continued to report that Rivera’s son is “in good health.”

According to CNN, Rivera’s son told authorities that he and his mother went swimming, but that she did not return to the boat. She was wearing a life jacket, while an adult life jacket was reportedly found in the boat.

The Ventura County Sheriff’s Department shared video footage of its search and rescue operation on Lake Piru on Wednesday night, which included a diving team, and said they will resume the effort “at first light” on Thursday by the morning.

TV Guide has reached out to Rivera’s representatives and the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department for more information and will update as it becomes available.
