Spy photos of the updated BMW 2 Series Coupe appeared last week, but since then our photographers have seen it twice in testing. The latest batch appears to show two versions of the 2 Series Coupe. While the two-door BMW is still covered in a lot of camouflage and lining, it’s hard to hide the exhaust pipes.
The next-generation Coupe 2 Series is expected to have two powertrains available: a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and an in-line six-cylinder six-cylinder and two turbochargers. The smallest mill should produce 255 horsepower (190 kilowatts) while the six in the M2 could generate more than 420 hp (313 kW). The 3.0-liter engine is supposed to be a detuned version of the X3 M and M4’s engine. The 2 Series will build on BMW’s CLAR architecture that underpins the larger 3 Series, keeping the two smallest doors in a rear-wheel drive design.
The new bases seem to help the car’s proportions, which look a bit better than the current vehicle. Up front, the lining hides the finer details, but BMW can’t hide the narrower grille and curved headlights flanking it. BMW has said that the larger 4 Series grille would not make its way on other models. There is also a wide opening in the bottom rack that occupies the space where the largest rack would live.

The Series 2 in the photos features recessed door handles that are similar to the ones we saw on the i4. One test vehicle we spy on has a single round tailpipe at the rear, while the other features a dual tailpipe with trapezoidal outlets. We can also detect a small spoiler and taillights, though it’s unclear if those lighting elements are production parts.

Two Toyota Supra models are visible in the background of a handful of photos, which could indicate where BMW expects the updated model to be able to compete. However, we still have some time before the German automaker comes up with a revelation. We don’t expect the next generation of the Series 2 Coupe to arrive until sometime in 2021 as a 2022 model. That makes the hottest M2 ever happen sometime in 2023.
