BMW 2 Series Coupe spied for the first time in Mexico

We have seen BMW actively testing the 2 Series Active Tourer on several occasions. One of the most recent was seen in the Alps, and the quirky crossover was tested at low temperatures. However, we have yet to see the version of the coupe in secret, not until today.

Spied on in Mexico by Eduardo Méndez for CarpixThis heavily camouflaged Series 2 coupe was seen testing outdoors. In case you’re wondering why BMW is testing the 2er in the land of burritos and tequila, recent reports suggest that the next generation of the 2 Series will be built at BMW’s new plant in San Luis Potosí, Mexico.

There’s not much to see through the heavy wraps on the G42 2 series. However, we are pretty sure it will not embrace the gigantic grille recently purchased by the larger Series 4. The alleged leaked images from the upcoming Series 2 came out last April, and the car’s exposed fascia supports this notion (desire).

On the back, the Series 2 we’ve seen before had a different set of tailpipes, unlike the round tips seen in these spy images. However, it is important to note that the alleged leaked images above appear to be for a hotter M performance variant, if not for the METERtwo.

What you’ll be glad to know is that the next-generation Series 2 will have a rear-wheel drive design worthy of a nickname “Drift Machine.” This diverts the G42 2er from the four-door 2-Series Gran Coupe and other models within its range, including the Active Tourer.

The next Series 2 will sit on the HPLC platform that Series 3 uses and will come with various engine options, which should include a six-cylinder power plant. However, a convertible version will not come to fruition.
