Blue Jays closer Ken Giles hits IL; Bo Bichette scratched for leg problem

WASHINGTON – Toronto Blue Jays closer Ken Giles entered the disabled list 10 days before Monday night’s opener of the series at the Washington Nationals with an effort to the right forearm, a day after leaving a game with what the team said was a pain in his right elbow.

The Blue Jays lost another player about 15 minutes before the first pitch on Monday when Bo Bichette, who was supposed to play shortstop and start, scratched himself due to a tight left hamstring.

Giles had an MRI on Monday. The right-hander entered the Toronto game’s ninth inning in the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday to try to save, but the reliever yielded a two-out double and a pair of bases that filled the bases. Giles then went on to a 3-1 count on the next batter before being eliminated. The Blue Jays ended up losing 6-5 in 10 innings.

Anthony Bass is expected to play the closest role for the Blue Jays while Giles is away.

In other moves Monday, Toronto activated IL right-hander Wilmer Font, removed left-hander Ryan Borucki from the taxi squad, added outfielder Billy McKinney to the taxi squad and placed infielder Travis Shaw on family medical leave.

Manager Charlie Montoyo also said that Randal Grichuk is day-to-day with back strain.
