HBO’s Bill maherWilliam (Bill) MaherBill Maher Says “Damn Stupid,” Unravels Police Message Bill Maher: “Reckless Experiment” Of Coronavirus Closures May Have Fueled Floyd Protests Bill Maher Offers “Signs That You Are A List Of Karen “:” You were voted more likely to make a citizen arrest “MORE He argued in his closing monologue on Friday night that “whites should stop trying to cancel other people” who have good intentions “but who don’t exactly do well on the first try.”
The presenter of “Real Time” expressed concern during his show that “the ‘gotcha’ guardians” will “push us toward a kind of re-segregation.”
“Blacks have to demand that whites stop culturally appropriating how angry they are at racism,” Maher said from his home studio in Los Angeles. “Is it great that Caucasians have finally joined the fight for racial justice in unprecedented numbers but that they hate racism the most? You can’t steal that! Elvis stealing Little Richard’s act, that’s bad enough.
The progressive host addressed several examples of embarrassing attempts and misunderstandings, including mocking an incident that involved Oakland, California Mayor Libby Schaaf (D) this month.
Schaaf had launched a hate crime investigation into what was described as “ropes” found in a city park that turned out to be an exercise rig built by an African-American man.
“Why is this white woman seeing racism where a black man is not?” Maher asked. “The mayor also said, ‘Intentions don’t matter,’ but they do matter. And whites should stop trying to cancel other white people whose hearts were in the right place, but they don’t exactly do it right on the first try.”

The host also pointed to Sacramento sportscaster Grant Napear, who was fired earlier this month for tweeting “All Lives Matter” in response to a fan’s question about the Black Lives Matter movement.
Hears!!!! How are you? I thought you’d forgotten about me. I haven’t heard from you in years. ALL LIVES ARE IMPORTANT … EACH ONE !!! https://t.co/DfzKl3w0jm– Grant Napear (@GrantNapearshow) June 1, 2020
“I am concerned that the kind of tensions the ‘gotcha’ guardians are creating is going to make people afraid of mixing at all, and it will push us towards a kind of re-segregation, where instead of just seeing one person and not color, now we are only seeing color, “Maher said.” Maybe this is old school liberalism speaking, but I don’t think that’s the way to go. “
Liberalism, he added, “should be about lifting people up rather than slapping people trying to say, ‘I’m on your side.'”
Maher’s comment echoes a theme he has highlighted earlier in his show regarding: canceling culture. “
“I think this ‘cancel culture’ is a cancer in progressivism,” Maher said on March 7. “Liberals always have to fight a two-front war. Republicans just have to fight Democrats; Democrats have to fight Republicans, and each other.”
“Real Time” was released on HBO in 2003.
