Bill de Blasio says mission in NYC school system is to ‘redistribute wealth’


New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio told a news conference Friday that he sees the redistribution of wealth as an important factor in ending structural racism in education.

“I want to say very frankly that our goal is to redistribute wealth,” he said. “A lot of people are standing on this line. That is, in fact, this is the line we should use.”

He added that the city government needs to “redistribute more appropriately” throughout the school system, which he said will include pre-K and 3-K for all and advanced placement courses in each high school.

The mayor said minority students most affected by coronavirus school closures, his office will focus on closing the “covid achievement gap,” which harms disproportionate children without access to technical resources during distance learning.

He announced several admissions changes in the city with the goal of fighting segregation in selected schools, including expanding diversification planning in each district, removing geographic priorities for the next two years, and expanding grant programs in more districts.
