Bill Belichick assesses Cam Newton – as a lacrosse player

New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick said his new quarterback Cam Newton reminds him of Myles Jones.

If you are trying to call Jones into your football memory, you are in the wrong sport. Jones is a professional lacrosse player.

Belichick made an appearance on the NBC Sports broadcast of the Premier Lacrosse League game between the Redwoods and Whipsnakes on Saturday and was asked what position Newton would play in lacrosse.

“Cam Newton looks like Myles Jones to me,” said Belichick. “He is fast. He is big. He would be a tough guy to deal with. I could run for them. He could go through those stick controls, and he would have a hard, stick work, a hard overhead shot, so I think those tall, long guys really do have a huge advantage of being able to change the angle of his shooting and still being able to go through some guys. “

A former Duke All-American, Jones is listed as a 6-foot-5, 260-pound midfielder on the Redwoods list. The Patriots list lists Newton as 6-5, 245.

Belichick played lacrosse and soccer at Wesleyan University.

CAM NEWTON MAKES A LAUNCH FOR PETA

Newton plans to show up for his first training camp with the Patriots on Monday. New England lost quarterback Tom Brady to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in free agency in March.

The former Auburn All-American signed a one-year contract with New England after the Carolina Panthers released him in March. Newton had been Carolina’s quarterback since the Panthers picked him with option No. 1 in the 2011 NFL Draft.

But a foot injury limited Newton to two games in 2019, and Carolina released him with a year remaining on his contract.

Quarterbacks and Patriots rookies are slated to perform at training camp on Monday. But it will be a while before Newton and his new companions enter the field.

Players showing up on Monday will be screened for the coronavirus and then again on Thursday. Players who return two negative tests will enter the New England practice facility on Friday.

After two days of physical exams and tests, players will perform strength and conditioning work and tours for a week. The Patriots will conduct their first full, but no fill, practice on at least August 10. Players will not put on pads before August 17.

Newton will not be the only Auburn student to report to the Patriots on Monday. Former Tigers Nick Coe and Will Hastings are rookies, and Jarrett Stidham is a quarterback with New England.
