Brianna Holt writes for us today on “White Cultivism,” and asks why some Americans wake up wo nline, but not in real life?

In the winter of 2018, 33-year-old Gwen Kansen, a self-proclaimed liberal, met a man named Elias in a bar. Within minutes she knew it was intense. His phone was a screensaver Pepe the Frog – a symbol of up-and-down movement. His style reminded him of a federal soldier, and he wore a badge declaring hatred for political uncertainty.

It wasn’t long before he announced that he was a member of the Proud Boys, a far-right, male-only political organization. However, Kansen did not end the date. They drank rum and cocks; Talked about music, books and teachings; And that night, she went to her house. There was a brief rift between the two. Later on Ken Nassen wrote an article about coming to terms with his so-called liberal beliefs while still choosing to entertain romance.

The article received feedback. People spammed her Twitter, questioning her ethics, dating standards and self-awareness. How can a so-called liberal woman choose a member of a group known for its anti-Muslim and anti-socialist rhetoric, its affiliation with extremist organizations and its white nationalist agenda? The consequences of this group are real life loss: death threats, ethnic huts, Violence and murder, too, and yet Kansen saw it as an opportunity to immerse himself in a restricted experience.

The story seems extreme, especially after the summer of “listening and learning”. Since the deaths of George Floyd, Ahmed Mahmoud Arbury, and Brenna Taylor, many white Americans have spent the past year participating in the social justice movement online and on the ground, fighting systemic racism, and protesting police brutality. Book stores sold outside of race education books, social media timelines eat from black lives matter support, and protests draw a variety of crowds.

But then we saw the election results. Trump won the support of 71 million Americans this year – 55% white women and 61% white men. Even in liberal hotbeds such as New York, California and Washington, Trump retained 48%, 47% and 36% of white votes.

Consistently supported a man who refused to denounce white supremacy, lied about the severity of the coronavirus, and was not shy about his sexuality and misconceptions, Liberal White Americans Really Depend On Their Social Media Profile Do You Believe It?
