The Biden campaign distances itself from controversial former leader Linda Sarsour of Women’s Women, after the Democratic National Committee presented them at a council meeting at the convention this week.
Sarsour, a leading left-wing Muslim lawyer who has been accused of anti-Semitism, appeared Tuesday at a virtual meeting of the “Muslim Delegates and Allies” of the Democratic National Convention.
Sarsour spoke during the appearance and claimed, “The Democratic Party is not perfect, but it is absolutely our party at the moment.”
The activist, who signed center Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) During the Democratic primary, has been vocal in her support for the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions movement, which calls for action against Israel in the form of economic warfare.
Before Senator Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) Came to the presidency with former Vice President Joe Biden, Sarsour refused to support it.
When she finally did, encouraging the progressive was less than enthusiastic.
“It is no secret that I do not agree with both VP Joe Biden and Senator Kamala Harris. But I know what I have to do – pick the Biden-Harris ticket and prepare yourself to hold them accountable in the White House, “she wrote on Twitter after the announcement.
After Sarsour attended the convention event on Tuesday, Team Biden was quick to point out that she was not involved in the former vice president’s presidential bid.
“Joe Biden has been a strong supporter of Israel all his life and a staunch opponent of anti-Semitism, and he obviously condemns their views and opposes BDS, as the Democratic platform does,” Biden spokesman Andrew Bates said in a statement Tuesday.
“She has no role in the Biden campaign,” he added before reiterating that the Democratic platform was against the BDS movement.
The Democratic Party platform states, “We oppose any attempt to unjustly excommunicate and delegitimize Israel, including in the United Nations or through the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions, while violating the constitutional right of our citizens to freedom of protect speech. “
Speaking to the Daily Beast, one Democratic Party official said the campaign was not involved in selecting participants for all events.
“The caucus and council chairs come up with their own programming and select their own speakers,” they said.
Sarsour appeared to be taking offense at Bates’ remark and rejection of her Biden campaign.
Taking to Twitter, she wrote a post that immediately called Bates and fired a warning shot.
“@AndrewBatesNC, just came here to remind you that you need a coalition to defeat Donald Trump and that Muslim Americans are a major constituency in major states like Michigan, Wisconsin, Virginia, Texas, Pennsylvania and I know a little bit about how they organize, ‘she said.
In late 2018, Sarsour apologized amid emerging criticism of her embrace of Louis Farrakhan, the Nation of Islam leader with a long history of anti-Semitic and homophobic remarks.
As a result, March began to associate with a man whose ‘Nation of Islam’ is characterized as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center.
“We should have been quicker and clearer to people to understand our values and our commitment to fighting anti-Semitism. We are sorry, “said Sarsour.
“Every member of our movement is interested in us – including our incredible Jewish and LGBTQ members. “We are deeply sorry for the damage we have caused, but we see you, we love you, and we are fighting with you,” he continued.
The apology did not hold up, and Sarsour – along with two other founding members of Women’s March, Tamika Mallory and Bob Bland – left the group in January 2019.
The Biden campaign did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.
