“The president will support Georgia and the community across the country and highlight his commitment to fighting xenophobia, intolerance and hatred,” White House Deputy Press Secretary Karin Jean-Pierre told reporters sitting on Air Force One on Friday.
Jean-Pierre said Biden “understands the past year and knows that the community has been rejected, ostracized and attacked.”
Biden will comment at Emery University later in the evening.
Jean-Pierre said of Biden’s speech, “You can expect the president to meet the moment we are.”
On Friday, the president issued a statement urging Congress to pass the Covid-19 Hate Crimes Act, which he said would “speed up the federal government’s response to the rise in hate crimes during the epidemic.”
Biden said the move would also support state and local governments in improving hate crime reporting and making hate crime information more accessible to Asian American communities.
Prior to the meeting with Asian American leaders, Biden and Harris received an update from the CVC’s health and medical experts about the Covid-19 epidemic.
“This is a war and you are frontline soldiers,” Biden told CDC staff. “I’m here to say thank you.”
