Beta AMD Adrenalin 20.5.1 driver adds graphics hardware programming to select Navi cards

A couple of days ago, AMD quietly released a feature update for its 20.5.1 Adrenalin controller, adding support for hardware accelerated GPU (GHS) programming on select Navi GPUs. From now on, the RX 5700 and 5600 series graphics cards, both on desktop computers and mobile devices, that is, RX 5700, RX 5600 and RX 5700M, RX 5600M, will support this function. Unfortunately, it means that Polaris and Vega owners, as well as Ryzen APU owners, will have to wait a bit longer to get this feature.

GHS is an important feature of WDDM 2.7 introduced in the Windows 10 May 2020 update (version 2004, build 19041). Rival Nvidia added support for the feature in its latest driver version 451.48 a few days ago, and AMD has followed suit, albeit only selectively for now.

Since this is just a beta expansion over its previous version of the driver, AMD has not noticed any separate specific bug fixes for this version. However, the firm has detailed the problems that have not yet been resolved:

  • Oculus ™ VR headsets may not display content or experience severe performance drops with hardware programming enabled.
  • Improved synchronization can cause a black screen to appear when enabled in some games and system settings. Any user who may have problems with Enhanced Sync enabled should disable it as a workaround.
  • Using the Edge ™ web browser to play video content with a multi-screen system configuration may cause the system to crash or freeze after long periods of use.
  • Overlapping performance metrics and Radeon WattMan incorrectly report higher than expected idle clock speeds on Radeon RX 5700 series graphics products. Performance and power consumption are not affected by this incorrect report.
  • Some games may exhibit intermittent stuttering during gameplay on the Radeon RX 5000 series graphics products.
  • Radeon RX Vega series graphics products may experience a system crash or TDR when making multiple task changes using Alt + Tab.
  • Corruption on the desktop or in the game can occur intermittently when HDR is enabled.
  • ML direct media filters are currently not available in the Radeon Software media gallery for video or image content.
  • Some users may still experience issues with black screen or system crash during long periods of gaming.
  • Some game titles may experience problems when Instant Replay is enabled in Radeon RX 5000 series system settings.

If you own a Navi GPU and want to try GHS, head over to the official release notes page here to download the Beta Radeon Software Adrenalin 2020 Edition 20.5.1 driver. Also, AMD’s Radeon Software application on Windows can also be used to update this driver, but be sure to enable “Optional” updates as this is a beta version.
