Beach lovers who want to go to the water in San Mateo County this weekend need to find alternative plans.
In a weekly newsletter to its residents, the city of Half Moon Bay, in conjunction with the city of Pacifica, said the province will publicly urge people not to travel to the peninsula this weekend, and that beaches will be closed today through Monday. .
According to the newsletter, Half Moon Bay City Manager Bob Nisbet on Thursday signed an executive order shutting down the city’s beaches from sunrise Friday.
The closure of the beaches and request for people to stay away from the shores of San Mateo County comes as an estimated 5,000 people in the south coast area are evacuated due to the CZU Lightning Complex fires that have burned about 10,000 acres. They are 0% contained.
Traffic from people traveling to the beaches would restrict access rights and evacuation routes for emergency services, according to the newsletter. Highway 1 is already closed south of Pescadero, which means that there is already more traffic on Highway 92.
Smoke remained heavy in the Bay Area on Friday morning, but official air measurements near the San Mateo Coast indicated that there was a moderate amount of fine wind in that area on Friday morning. The pollution was in the unusual range closer to Santa Cruz.
