Beginning tomorrow, Thursday, July 16, the beaches of Port Aransas will be closed to vehicular access until August 1, a period that spans more than two weeks, according to city and county officials.

The vehicle ban will take effect at 8:30 pm tomorrow, according to Port Aransas Mayor Charles Bujan.

Nueces County Judge Barbara Canales issued the order today, and the city of Port Aransas will enforce it, according to Bujan.

The measure is being taken to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Nueces County has recently seen huge spikes in the reported number of people with the virus.

Beach visitors will be able to walk to the beach, just as they did when the beaches were closed to vehicular access during the July 4 vacation weekend, Bujan said.

A curfew on the beach will also take effect, across the county, starting tomorrow. The curfew will be for all activities from 8:30 pm to 6 am each day until August 1.
