Fierce burns and high temperatures are expected to choke the Bay Area with unfavorable air by at least Wednesday.
The Bay Area Air Quality Management District issued a Spare the Air warning over the weekend on Saturday, banning wood and other fuels.
The forecast calls for unusual outdoor conditions for sensitive groups in most of the Bay Area, and unusual conditions for all residents in the Santa Clara Valley and much of the East Bay. The worst conditions are expected in San Jose and many of the Alameda and Contra Costa counties through Wednesday, according to the agency.
Smoke and private pollution have grown across the region from major wildfires, and air quality is not expected to improve until Thursday, forecasters say. Officials are encouraging people to limit the time spent outside.
The National Weather Service also warned a red flag for Northern California on Sunday and Monday. The warning comes as dry thunderstorms are expected to hit Sunday, with not much rain in the forecast.
The warning means that weather can set extreme fire behavior within 24 hours, according to Cal Fire.
