President Barack Obama is giving special thanks to legends like Satchel Paige and Josh Gibson on the 100th anniversary of the Black League … praising players for changing baseball history.
Of course, the Black Leagues were created in 1920 because there was an unwritten rule that MLB teams could not sign black players … until Jackie robinson broke the color barrier in 1947.
FYI: Some of the best players in the sport were minorities … and there are 35 National League players in the Hall of Fame.
Obama along with other powerful people like Bill clinton, George W. Bush, Michael Jordan and current MLBer Nelson Cruz – Joined the “Tip Your Cap” campaign to honor the league on its 100th anniversary.
“Today, I am bowing to all the members of the Black League who have left a legacy of talent, spirit and dignity in our century-old country,” Obama said.
“So here are Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, Cool Papa Bell and everyone else, including three brave women, who made us proud.”
I am proud to join the # TipYourCap2020 campaign in honor of the Black League centennial and the talented men and women who played in it from 1920 to 1960. The Black Leagues improved baseball and improved America. pic.twitter.com/ToG1xOOLRr
