New Delhi:
The verdict in the 28-year-old case related to the demolition of Bab Bheli Babri Masjid at the Ram Janmabhoomi site in Ayodhya will be delivered today by a special court in Lucknow. The 1992 demolition – before a series of rathyatras by BJP’s LK Advani – claimed the lives of nearly 20,000,000 people and changed the country’s political landscape. The accused in the case include senior leaders of the ruling BJP – the party’s founding members – Shri Advani and Murli Manohar Joshi, former ministers Uma Bharti and Kalyan Singh. Mr. Advani, Mr. Joshi and Mrs. Bharti were not present in the court and were joined by video link.

Here are the top 10 points of the story:

  1. Among the 32 surviving accused in the case, LK Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, Uma Bharti and Kalyan Singh are facing charges of criminal conspiracy and incitement to enmity. The court has asked all the accused to be present to decide whether they and others incited and incited thousands of activists to bring down the mosque in December 1992. The 26 accused present in the court include Faizabad MP Lallu Singh, Unnao MP Sakshi Maharaj, Kaisarganj MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, Ram Mandir Trust member Champat Rai and 22 others.

  2. Mr. Advani, Mr. Joshi and Uma Bharti were on the dais near the mosque at the time of demolition on December 6, 1992. Investigative agencies said they provoked the crowd with their speeches.

  3. At the time of the demolition, senior BJP leader Kalyan Singh was the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. His government was ousted shortly after the uprising, which left nearly 1,000,000 people dead.

  4. Former Union Minister Uma Bharti, who was admitted to a hospital in Uttarakhand after signing the Kovid-19 contract, has accused BJP chief J.P.

  5. Mr Advani recorded his statement before a special CBI court on July 24 via video conference. He was asked 100 questions by a special judge. Mr. Joshi recorded his statement a day before Mr. Advani. Both have denied all the allegations against them.

  6. In the last 28 years, this case has taken a troubling path. From the first two cases reported in 1992, the number of cases has risen to 49. The second case, FIR No. 198, had the names of Mr. Advani, Mr. Joshi and Uma Bharti, in which they accused him of inciting religious animosity and rioting.

  7. In 1993, the Central Bureau of Investigation filed a single, unified chargesheet against 48 people, including Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray and Kalyan Singh.

  8. The cases against Mr. Advani, Mr. Joshi and Uma Bharti went from Lalitpur to Lucknow from Rae Bareli. The last shift was following the Supreme Court’s order to reinstate the criminal conspiracy charges against him, which were quashed by the CBI and rejected by the Allahabad High Court.

  9. In April 2017, the apex court directed the Lucknow special court to complete the hearing in two years with a daily hearing. Later, he was given several extensions and when Special Judge S.K.

  10. The 16th century mosque is said to have been built by Mir Baki, the general of the Mughal emperor Babur, after pulling down an ancient temple depicting the birthplace of Lord Rama in Ayodhya. In a landmark judgment in November, the Supreme Court ordered the construction of a temple on the site. A groundbreaking ceremony was held earlier this year in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated.
