A new day of black sun has arrived for the Avatar: The Last Airbender fans Michael Dante DiMartino en Bryan Konietzko, who created the original critically acclaimed animated series Nickelodeon, have parted ways with Netflix’s live-action remake. Both DiMartino and Konietzko have been affiliated as executive producers and showrunners since the project was announced in 2018, but they have announced that they are leaving the project on the “creative direction.”
DiMartino announced in a post on its website entitled “An open letter to Avatar: The Last Airbender fans ”that he and Konietzko share ways with the live action of Netflix Avatar: The Last Airbender series because the two can not “control the creative direction of the series.” DiMartino wrote:
When Bryan and I joined the project in 2018, we were hired as executive producers and showrunners. In a joint announcement for the series, Netflix said it was committed to honoring our vision for this iteration and supporting us in making the series. And we expressed how excited we were for the opportunity to be at the helm. Unfortunately, things did not go as we had hoped.
See, things happen. Productions are challenging. Unforeseen events arise. Plans need to change. And when these things happen at other points during my career, I try to be an Air Nomad and adapt. I do my best to go with the flow, no matter what obstacle sets in my way. But even an Air Nomad knows when it’s time to cut back on their loss and move on.
‘I realized I could not control the creative direction of the series, but I could control how I reacted. That, I have chosen to leave the project, ”DiMartino continued. Netflix is apparently pushing ahead with the live-action remake, which DiMartino added, “has the potential to be good … But what I can be sure of is that whichever version ends up on screen, it will not be what Bryan and I proposed or intended to do. “
Considering the lack of updates on the Avatar: The Last Airbender live action series over the past two years, and the silence on Netflix’s side, perhaps this news does not come as a complete surprise. But this is still a massive bummer for fans of the animated series, for whom DiMartino and Konietzko’s involvement in the Netflix project were the only appeal to see a live-action remake of a beloved series whose legacy was almost devastated. was by the disastrous M. Night Shyamalan film. It certainly does not bode well for the direction of the Netflix series, which can now dangerously deviate from the original vision of DiMartino and Konietzko, who would assure them that they would be as close as possible to the animated series ( and without that awkward laundering). Could this mean that Netflix is likely to whitewash the new live-action series? Could it be another disaster at Shyamalan level? It’s too early to tell.
But Netflix can just lose a lot of the goodwill they got by bringing the animation Avatar: The Last Airbender to his service earlier this summer, in addition to his upcoming spin-off The Legend of Korra, with the franchise enjoying an unbelievable resurgence in popularity of old and new fans. However, DiMartino guarantees that he will still be involved in the Avatar universe thanks to that renewed popularity. Unfortunately, it just won’t be with the Netflix series.
