EU Employment Commissioner Nicolas Schmit wants to mitigate the negative effects of the pandemic on job opportunities for young workers. Support measures focus on the digital economy.
The press: The coronavirus represents a health risk, especially for the elderly, but the economic consequences of the months-long lockdowns must be borne by the young. Are we waiting for a lost generation or is there still hope?
Nicolas Schmit: There must always be hope. But it’s true: we live in a time of great uncertainty, and no one knows exactly how long this pandemic will cause such economic recessions. The generation that is entering the labor market now faces extremely difficult conditions. For example, there is the phenomenon that companies no longer employ young people due to lack of predictability. There are also many young people who are or have been employed in precarious jobs, in sectors particularly affected by the pandemic, such as tourism.
