A construction worker in Vienna Donaustadt was completely buried Tuesday afternoon. He owes his life to the quick help of his colleagues.
The worker was inside a trench (pit-shaped excavation into which pipes are laid) when the accident occurred. An avalanche of sliding earth buried the man above his head. He threatened to suffocate.
However, the man’s co-workers managed to quickly intervene to expose the head area. Firefighters who arrived shortly afterwards dug up the victim piece by piece with shovels and sometimes with their bare hands. But the rescue turned out to be more complicated than expected.
Rescuers at risk slide down
The land masses continued to slide downward, so the excavation pit had to continually be secured with currently available construction materials. Due to the high level of physical effort, it was necessary to keep changing teams. Eventually, the victim could be completely dug up and turned over to the rescue service.
