In the event of an accident in the demanding section on the Lower Austria side of the Semmering base tunnel, a worker died Thursday.

The worker was still rescued, but died a little later despite the efforts of the alarmed forces, including the crew of an emergency medical helicopter. According to ÖBB, there were no other victims.
The tragic death of the worker overshadows the completion of the first half of the excavation work, which was only announced Wednesday after eight years of construction.
