The president of the FPÖ club made public two days after the attack with information on actions of the secret police against Islamists. The ÖVP accuses him of endangering the police and disturbing the population. ÖVP club president August Wöginger didn’t give a damn about Kickl’s tenure at a press conference.
“Kickl left a lot of manure, not just horse manure,” Wöginger said Tuesday, referring to the police horse project that Kickl smiled a lot. And Kickl had a total of seven no-confidence motions in parliament in just a year and a half in office. “That is a sad record.” Kickl acts in a dubious way and “damages the office of a parliamentarian” and endangers the safety of the police officers and therefore the safety of the population. “I urge Kickl to refrain from doing that,” Wöginger said.
Wöginger and security spokesman Karl Mahrer rejected the allegation that the ÖVP attacks on Kickl were aimed at diverting attention from abuses at the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution and the Fight against Terrorism, and referred to the reform of the BVT initiated by Interior Minister Karl Nehammer (ÖVP). Furthermore, Nehammer had requested that the permanent subcommittee of the Homeland Committee be convened to inform the members of this secret committee about more details about the BVT and the terrorist attack. As chairman of the Interior Committee, he has already complied with this request, the subcommittee must now take place within the next 14 days, Mahrer said.
“Interior Minister Nehammer acts responsibly and provides competent and prompt information. Former Interior Minister Kickl does the exact opposite.” Mahrer von Kickl demanded a “clarification” that it was a unique event in history that a former interior minister cited from closed files and thus put people in danger. He pointed out that the general director of Public Security, Franz Ruf, has already presented an account of the events in this case.
Wöginger was covered by the announced commission of inquiry, which is supposed to clear up possible errors by the authorities in the run-up to the attack. However, this should not be located in Parliament. The opposition has numerous control rights. But first an independent commission should clarify the situation. He was also unwilling to provide information on the subject of preventive detention for people at risk. Sometimes there is massive resistance from the green coalition partner. We are in intense discussions, Wöginger said. It is as much about BAT reform as it is about instruments for executive bodies and the question of “how do we deal with the parties at risk”.
