According to the World Health Organization (WHO), one in ten people in the world could already have been infected with the new type of coronavirus. “Our current best estimates show that around 10 percent of the world’s population may already have been infected with this virus,” WHO expert Mike Ryan said in Geneva on Monday.

That would correspond to an unreported number of more than 700 million undetected infections in addition to the around 35 million cases that have been detected so far. The proportion of those already infected varies by country, between urban and rural population and also by social groups, Ryan said.

Coronavirus: immunity not completely cleared

Even with such a high number of unreported cases, the vast majority of people around the world are still at risk for Covid 19 disease, he stressed. The degree to which people are immune to the pathogen for at least a time after surviving an infection with Sars-CoV-2 has not yet been conclusively clarified.
