What’s behind the FPÖ anti-crown measures course

KURIER: As a health spokesperson, how do you assess the growing resistance to the measures taken by the federal government?

Kaniak: With its excessive and in some cases unconstitutional measures, the federal government has defied popular resistance. Responsible and effective crisis management definitely looks different. Particularly problematic in terms of health policy is the trust that the government has placed in the citizens’ arena in the institutions, because it will make it even more difficult in the future to implement the measures that are really necessary.

What is the FPÖ’s current alternative proposal to government measures?

We have a five-point plan that has already been communicated several times and shows the way out of the crisis. If points 4 (effective protection of risk groups) and 5 (strengthening of health authorities and expansion of treatment capacities, including the rapid introduction of new and alternative therapeutic options) are implemented, a new wave of “infections” in Austria it can be managed without closure, school closings or curfews.

Intensive care physicians are already warning of a further worsening of the situation in intensive care units. Does a wider opening still make sense?

Yes, because many of the Federal Government’s measures have lost their effectiveness or have never had a measurable effect. In these areas, “relaxed” definitely belongs. Of course, basic hygiene rules must be observed, especially in areas with high-risk groups. And, of course, every citizen must and can voluntarily protect himself beyond what is legally required.

Many people in the demonstration were without a mask. What is the FPÖ’s position on the subject of the use of masks?

A measurable effectiveness of wearing the mask in the SARS CoV-2 infection process cannot be determined according to AGES. But even individual protection is only granted if it is used correctly and the quality of the product is adequate. That is why we are still against the general requirement of masks (especially outdoors) and we see a sensible application mainly in the health sector and anywhere else where there is close contact with high risk groups. In addition, there is an urgent need for regulation on how people with health problems can obtain medical certificates that exempt them from wearing a mask.
