Werner Kogler: the mediator in the second row

He was never put in the spotlight. So it’s not just thanks to Corona that another Verde is playing the leading role on the political stage. However, the role of the Vice Chancellor should not be underestimated.

Not that from a government perspective it is particularly desirable for Herbert Kickl to mention it in a parliamentary speech. But it is amazing who the boss of the FPÖ club is addressing at the last meeting of the National Council. Kickl just presented a motion of no confidence to the entire federal government. Then he lists them, the ministers who, in his opinion, should resign: Karl Nehammer (Interior), Christine Aschbacher (Labor), Alma Zadić (Justice), Gernot Blümel (Finance), etc. Kickl singles out one of them as “very special”: Health Minister Rudolf Anschober. He doesn’t even mention another: Werner Kogler; after all, the head of the Greens and the vice chancellor.

It corresponds to the image that the German government has been presenting to the population for weeks. The central green figure in the crisis, the most present actor, is the Minister of Health. The most important competencies to combat the pandemic are grouped in your department. Anschober’s behavior made him the most popular member of the government in the summer polls. But also a target for political competitors. And Kogler?
