A weak influence of high pressure is currently ensuring calm autumn weather in Austria. Friday temperatures rise to 22 degrees with temporary sunshine. However, the influence of the low pressure increases again on Saturday, with the cold front of a North Sea low called Esther spreading over the Alpine region during the course of the day.

Tauern: the snow line falls in places in the valley

“With the advance of cold air masses in the Mediterranean area, a low formed over northern Italy on Saturday night,” analyzes Manfred Spatzierer, chief meteorologist at the severe weather center. “On Sunday masses of very humid air enter the country and the line of snow falls in the Tauern area and in Carinthia to some valleys” “

A little sun on saturday

Saturday begins in most of the country with a mix of sunshine, extensive clouds, and local foggy fields. In Vorarlberg, by contrast, thick clouds and showers from a cold front arrive early in the morning. In the later course, the front advances eastward and includes Tyrol, Salzburg, and Upper Austria in the afternoon. It remains sunny for longer in the southeast, towards the afternoon the tendency to rain increases here as well. The snowfall limit in the northern Alps has already dropped to about 1,300 meters, the maximum values are between 9 degrees in Bregenzerwald and 21 degrees in the southeast.

The weekends will be wet and cold

On Sundays it rains frequently and sometimes with great intensity, especially in Carinthia, Salzburg and Styria. The snow initially falls above 800 to 1,100 meters, during the day it snows, especially in the Tauern area and in Carinthia, sometimes up to some valleys. “There may be temporary sleet in Carinthia even in places around 500 meters,” the meteorologist said. A few centimeters of wet snow is to be expected, especially in Karawanken and generally in the central and southern mountainous region at locations around 800 meters upwards.

Fresh snow in the mountains

In the east it also rains frequently again in the second half of the day, but little rain falls in Vorarlberg and from the Inn to Upper Waldviertel. Temperatures peak at 3-11 degrees with a partially brisk northwest wind. “From the Zillertal Alps, through the Tauern, to the Gurktal Alps, about 20 to 30 centimeters of snow collects above almost 2,000 meters, and sometimes more than 40 centimeters in the high altitudes of the Steiner Alps and Julianos, “says the meteorologist.

Good start to the new week

Under the predominant influence of low pressure, the unstable nature of the climate in Central Europe will continue into the next week and temperatures will initially remain below the long-term average. Monday is mostly dry with a mix of lots of clouds and only a few rains in the mountains.
