“On Thursday you can expect mostly sunny weather and late summer temperatures of up to 27 degrees in eastern Austria,” predicts Manfred Spatzierer, chief meteorologist at Unwetterzentrale (UWZ). “In the west and southwest, however, the gathering clouds herald the impending weather shift.” In Salzburg it is cloudy and from time to time you can see the sun.
In the second half of the day, the tendency for showers and storms increases in the extreme west and in the southern mountainous region and at night the rain extends from Vorarlberg to Carinthia.
The snow line falls to 1,000 meters
On Friday the clouds dominate and the heavy rains fall in the Alps from the beginning. During the day the rain spreads to the east and especially in the south it rains heavily and thunderstorms. Some loosening can be expected from Lower Carinthia to Burgenland at most, but strong thunderstorms are also possible here. The snowfall limit initially drops in Vorarlberg, then generally in the Northern Alps in the afternoon to 1,400 to 1,200 meters. “However, when the rain is heavier, sometimes you see some wet snow even up to 1,000 meters,” says Spatzierer.

Start of winter on the roads of the western mountain pass
Saturday starts in winter on some passing roads such as Arlberg or Brenner. Even during the day, rain and snow often fall from Vorarlberg to northern Upper Styria. The snow line here varies between 1000 and 1300 meters. Since the snow is very wet and the trees still have leaves, there may be disabilities due to branches or broken snow.
High 16 degrees on the weekend
“In locations above 2,000 meters in the Northern Alps you can expect 30 to 50 cm of fresh snow,” explains the expert. In the Arlberg reservoirs and in the higher areas of the main Alpine range, there are even amounts of more than half a meter in sight. In the east and south, on the other hand, the rain subsides slowly during the day and with strong northwest winds with gusts of 60 km / h the clouds loosen a bit. However, temperatures do not exceed 4 to 16 degrees with the highest values in the southeast.
The new week will be fickle, but warmer
On Sunday, the influence of low pressure eased somewhat, but temperatures remained low. The unstable weather will continue next week, and temperatures will tend to rise slightly again. However, the values comparable to the last one are no longer in sight.
