Theft, break-ins, forgeries: international police warn of a high level of crime related to the corona vaccine. And of corruption.
Many countries have started getting vaccinated against the coronavirus. It will start soon in Austria. The global vaccination procedure also attracts criminals en masse. In early December, the international criminal police organization Interpol warned of a wave of crime related to the pandemic.
Now Interpol boss Jürgen Stock is taking a step forward. “The vaccine is liquid gold in 2021,” he says in an interview with “Wirtschaftswoche”. It is the most valuable thing to be distributed next year. Therefore, with the launch of vaccines, crime will increase dramatically. “We will see robberies and raids of warehouses and raids on shipments of vaccines.” Corruption will also be rampant in many places in order to get to valuable material more quickly.
Laboratories, universities and hospitals in focus
According to Stock, the mafia and other criminal organizations have long been preparing. Institutions involved in overcoming the Corona crisis have increasingly focused on criminals. This included authorities, laboratories, research institutions, universities, hospitals, and schools.
Even before a vaccine was approved, criminals were distributing counterfeit vaccines, the Interpol chief said. He had never seen such a phenomenon in his long career as a cop. “A virus spreads from Asia to all continents and is followed by a crime wave, a parallel crime pandemic, so to speak.”

Perpetrator groups had been thinking about how to make money from Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic. “Instead of counterfeiting drugs as before, for example, they quickly switched to counterfeit disinfectants, so-called anti-virus drugs, and inferior protective masks.”
In an internationally coordinated action, Interpol had already seized $ 15 million worth of counterfeit protection material in March. “But we also see in many other areas that criminals are seizing the pandemic as an opportunity.”
Hospitals with regular suppliers are not among the buyers of counterfeit vaccines. “Where supply chains have been established for years, it is difficult for criminals to sneak in. On the other hand, the origin is easier to hide on the Internet,” Stock says of “Wirtschaftswoche.”
This is how Austria wants to vaccinate
The first vaccines throughout Austria will start on December 27 at 9 am at the Meduni Vienna. The focus of the first vaccines is on high-risk groups aged 80 and over, with a focus on nursing homes and nursing homes, as well as healthcare workers in the exposed area. “The first five subjects who volunteered” were selected from a corona ambulance. Then he will continue with the other patients at risk.
In Vienna, the Covid-19 vaccines will start on Sunday at the Favoriten Clinic at 12.30 p.m. First, the staff of the Covid station of the Favoriten Clinic will be vaccinated. The second dose of vaccination after the vaccination campaign in Favoriten at 12.30 pm will be delivered to the “neighbors of the Leopoldau nursing home” at 2 pm. Lower Austria has also announced the start of vaccination: the day center of the St. Pölten nursing and care center of the Lower Austrian State Health Agency (Haus an der Traisen) is starting. It then continues at 3.30pm at the Caritas St. Elisabeth Nursing Home in St. Pölten.
