Matthias Walkner shows a decent performance in the prologue of the Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia. In the eleven kilometers before the race, Walkner finished 18th, 32 seconds behind, but is now 2:08 minutes behind due to a new regulation. “Since the finish time is multiplied by a factor of four, the tactical work around the starting line-up on the first day was eliminated,” explained the 2018 Dakar winner.

American Ricky Brabec (Honda) completed the route in and around Jeddah the fastest. Due to the location of his prologue, the KTM rider will approach the first stage from further behind. Walkner said: “That is certainly not a disadvantage. The first stage is not very long, but it is certainly tough.

Walkner was satisfied with his performance during the first kilometers of the year. It was “really cool” to drive: “I didn’t want to risk too much, just getting in was important to me.”

The first real stage is on Sunday morning, which takes more than 623 kilometers from Jeddah to Bisha, with 277 kilometers counted for the special. The Austrian does not follow a “special strategy” at the start of the race. “I will try to do my best every day and do my best.”
