At WAC there is much to think about before the start of the two-week international break. With 2: 4 at home on Saturday against SKN St. Pölten, the Europa League starter has only three points in the Bundesliga after four rounds. While the losses to Red Bull Salzburg and LASK weren’t yet surprising, the bankruptcy against Lower Austria hurt even more.
“We just weren’t inflexible in the duels in the decisive actions. We made it too easy for our opponents,” explained coach Ferdinand Feldhofer. “The defense was not good. But the defense starts from the front. We’d better go counter pressure, we didn’t do that.”
However, Styrian and his troops did not want to go to court with too much force. “He was basically not dissatisfied with the performance,” Feldhofer said. “We tried everything, the second half was excellent. We would have had enough chances, but we didn’t take advantage of them.”
But not only the exploitation of occasions, the personal situation worries the former defender. Michael Novak was injured while warming up, Sven Sprangler before half-time and Manuel Kuttin, replacement for the also injured regular goalkeeper Alexander Kofler, had to remain in the locker room during the break. “Today everything went well,” Feldhofer said.
The coach now has two weeks to get the team back on track, then things go in rapid succession: starting with the ÖFB Cup second round game on October 18 against SV Ried, the Wolfsberger expects seven competitive games within 22 days.
St. Pölten coach Robert Ibertsberger can look forward to the upcoming league interruption much more relaxed. Seven points from four rounds is a remarkable result for last year’s relegation candidate. “It’s a lot of fun right now. But I know very well that it can go quickly in the other direction. So we all stay humble,” promised the Salzburg man.
One of the winners of the SKN match was Dor Hugi with a double pack. The Israeli, who led the shooting list with four hits for at least a day, scored his second notable goal with a deep instep wound before being substituted shortly after. The offensive player should be back in shape for the cup duel with Red Bull Salzburg on October 17.
