Michael Raffl was able to really enjoy Tuesday night. The forward made his comeback with his home club on his 32nd birthday and held a 2-1 derby against KAC with VSV in the ICE ice hockey league. For Raffl, on loan from the NHL club Philadelphia Flyers, it was the first game in the blue and white jersey in nine and a half years.
The Villachers began the 331 Carinthian Derby with great vigor and finally celebrated a well deserved victory. “I’ve been waiting for the derby for a few days, you have to want to win that like Villacher,” Raffl said in an interview with Sky. “2-1 is better than 7-1, that shows the morale of the team. We were extremely compact, it was a deserved victory,” said the forward happily.
The fans in front of the televisions watched an exciting and fast-paced game from the start. Raffl showed his class again and again and in line with the center Patrick Björkstrand and Jerry Pollastrone caused a lot of danger in front of the KAC goal, but without accounting success. In the 4th minute he couldn’t get the puck in good position after an ideal pass from Matt Mangene missed goalkeeper David Madlener.
In the middle third, Christof Wappis (24th) put the hosts ahead with his first goal of the season. KAC struck back through Lukas Haudum (34th), with a backhand shot that VSV goalkeeper Kristers Gudlevskis, otherwise strong, missed. But just 100 seconds later, the Adlers were ahead again when VSV’s top scorer, Sahir Gill, completed a wonderful combination to make it 2-1.
In the final third, the KAC pressed for an equalizer, but the Villachers held out well and also survived a controversial penalty in the final. VSV finally celebrated a victory against their local rivals after three defeats in the derby.
League leaders HCB Südtirol increased their lead over their first Graz rival to three points with their seventh consecutive victory. A double hit by Michael Halmo (30th) and Marco Insam (33rd) kicked off the 4-1 win against the Dornbirn Bulldogs.
Salzburg achieved the third victory in five days. The Red Bulls defeated Fehervar, third in the table, 4: 3 and moved closer to the first group. Salzburg lagged behind in the majority (11th), but went ahead 3-1 in the 29th minute. After the Hungarians’ next goal, John Jason Peterka scored the decisive goal with his second goal that night (51st). The German NHL hope contributed ten scoring points (four goals, six assists) to the three victories.
