Virologist Elisabeth Puchhammer-Stöckl was a guest on “ZiB 2”. He spoke to Armin Wolf about the free trial, vaccination, and crown numbers.
In “ZiB 2” on Sunday, virologist Elisabeth Puchhammer-Stöckl from the Medical University of Vienna spoke with moderator Armin Wolf on explosive topics related to the situation of the crown. On the one hand, he also commented on the “free trial” planned by the government, which wants to block the entire opposition, making it impossible for the amendment to enter into force on time. On the other hand, it also entered the persistently high number of infections and corona vaccines.
Closed opposition to “free trials”
The great chaos surrounding the epidemic law amendment will apparently lead to the total failure of the “free trial.” After the FPÖ ruled against it from the beginning, the SPÖ and NEOS have now also announced that they will not agree to the project. Due to the SPÖ / FPÖ / NEOS majority of 31 to 30 seats in the Federal Council, the decision on the freest can therefore be delayed up to eight weeks. The free trial for the week of January 18-24 would not be possible.
Extension of confinement if …
The virologist first commented on the crown mutation. She is sure that now it is also likely to happen in Austria. More worrisome than the “normal” coronavirus is the new variant, although the mutation is significantly more infectious, but not. Here it is also important to protect yourself, keep your distance, wear masks and respect hygiene measures.
According to the virologist, the current high number of infections despite the closure in Austria can be attributed to the Christmas holidays and the run-up to Christmas. Since the lockdown did not go into effect until December 26, lower crown numbers can be expected starting next week at the earliest. The goal is to achieve an incidence of 50 in 7 days; currently the value is just under 160. If this is unsuccessful, the lock could be extended. At the end of next week we will be able to say more about this with the help of the latest figures. The federal government will finally decide on a possible extension.
Free choice as a reward
The virologist sees the concept of “free tests” as a reward from the government for all those who want to have the corona test after the blockade as part of the mass tests. Virologically, however, the test does not make sense to prevent infections, for example, in the restaurant sector. A negative test result simply means that a person is only negative on the day the negative result was obtained. “The next day he can look completely different again.” An antigen test only makes sense if it is used the same day it is performed. Test results that are up to a week old and displayed in the restaurant industry cannot guarantee that a person is not infected.
Demands that politicians first test themselves to prove the vaccine is safe are based on the fear of many that vaccination could have negative consequences. According to Puchhammer-Stöckl, a little more education is required regarding corona vaccination. It should be explained why an RNA vaccine is significantly less of a concern than a corona infection.
