Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) welcomed Hebein and his team, club boss David Ellensohn and second on the list, Peter Kraus, wearing a green tie. Not only in terms of fashion, but also in terms of culinary delights, the red team again made a difference. If yesterday the rosés were given krapferl punch, today they were served sweets from an organic vegan bakery, as well as green smoothies. The Ökos didn’t want to be accused of being bad guests either. Hebein brought to the meeting a basket with two bottles of “Michl” and “Birgit” beer.
In exploratory talks, the SPÖ, which is represented in addition to Ludwig by state party secretary Barbara Novak and club president Josef Taucher, wants to probe which of the three available parties (NEOS, Greens or ÖVP) should enter into negotiations for specific coalition. The decision will reportedly be made towards the end of the week.
Hebein had already clearly announced a third edition of the red-green coalition before the Vienna elections and is therefore under heavy pressure despite the record election result. Rumors recently spread that the Reds would only be available for further cooperation without a raised leg, although the person in question has already ruled out a resignation.
In the case of intergovernmental cooperation, the Greens would be entitled to two instead of one seat on the town hall due to their increased votes. The NEOS would only get one apartment and it would be, in this sense at least, the “cheapest” partner for the SPÖ.
Two councilors would also fall to the ÖVP in the case of a coalition. The Turquoises have their exploratory appointment on Wednesday afternoon. A red-turquoise city government currently appears to be the most unlikely of the three options.
