The mayor of Vienna, Ludwig, and the director of the Chamber of Commerce, Ruck, turned on the traditional Christmas lights on Friday night. It should radiate “confidence and hope” in difficult times.
Although the coronavirus gave Christmas markets an early rejection on the eve of renewed tightening of measures, Vienna does not want to do without the pre-Christmas atmosphere entirely. Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) and President of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce (WKW) Walter Ruck turned on the traditional Christmas lights on Friday evening in the city center Stock-im-Eisen-Platz. 31 urban shopping streets will remain adequately decorated until mid-January.
The cost of the lighting is borne by the city, the chamber and the businesses through the commercial street associations. “In these demanding times for all of us, holiday lighting must above all radiate confidence and hope,” Ludwig said via broadcast. It is important that, against all odds, people do not lose their joy at Christmas time ”.
Energy-saving LED lamps
Meanwhile, Ruck advertised regional purchases and personal advice at Viennese trading companies. The Christmas lights are an expression of “solidarity and optimism in our city,” Ruck said.
It has also been pointed out today that a large part of the mounted light bodies are already equipped with LED technology. This would reduce electricity costs by 80 percent and the life of the lamps would be much longer.
