Great start to the 69th Four Hills Tournament in Oberstdorf. After surviving the crown infection, Karl Geiger sensationally wins the inaugural competition against the Polish Kamil Stoch and the Norwegian Marius Lindvik. Geiger now has the best chance of winning the first German overall victory in a Four Hills tournament since Sven Hannawald in 2002.
The inaugural competition of the 69th Four Hills Tournament was really tough. With a 142 meter set, favorite Markus Eisenbichler made the first hammer in the final round. With the longest jump of the day, Eisenbichler only improved from 26th place to 5th, the first jump “Eisei” was not as successful as expected. Eisenbichler’s overall victory chances are absolutely intact after the first competition. Before Eisenbichler, Halvor Egner Granerud, the big favorite, lands in fourth place in the daily classification. The same applies to Granerud: they are still the best chances of winning the tour.
On the day’s qualifying podium, however, there were three that he shouldn’t have expected: Norwegian Marius Lindvik, who won both ski jumping competitions in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Innsbruck last year, surprisingly flies to third place: “It’s great that I finally got back to doing good jumps. Now I am looking forward to the competition in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, where I really enjoy jumping, ”says Lindvik, who has also been one of the favorites to win the tour since today.
Second place for Kamil Stoch, who yesterday and the Polish team had been banned from the beginning by the authorities, but was able to start today: “I feel great, it was just amazing today. I really don’t want to talk about what happened yesterday, I just want to thank the coaches and the Polish Ski Federation for fighting for us. I hope you learn from the situation and that something like this does not happen again, ”explained Stoch with a view to the Covid ban from the Polish team, which was later lifted on the day of the competition.
However, local hero Karl Geiger was the radiant winner of the day. Geiger has experienced extreme ups and downs in recent days: world ski champion in Planica, then father of a daughter, then a Covid-19 infection, just last Sunday the exit permit for Oberstdorf and now the celebrated victory in his community. of origin: “I am very proud, it was a very special day for me. Winning in Oberstdorf after everything that has happened in recent days is very special. I am grateful and happy. It is a pity that there are no fans in the stadium today But victory is something very special even without fans, ”Geiger said after the competition.
With Stefan Kraft and Philipp Aschenwald, two Austrians convinced in sixth and eighth place in the extended top, who, like Geiger, also survived a Covid-19 infection. Aschenwald had already won the classification the day before and was allowed to keep the winner’s check for 5,000, although the classification was not counted.
The surprise in the Polish team remains Andrzej Stekala, the 25-year-old is slowly but surely establishing himself as a permanent fixture in the Polish team, seventh place for Stekala today.
Besides Geiger and Eisenbichler, only Severin Freund from the German team was able to qualify in 25th place for the final of the top 30.
The second competition of the 69th Four Hills Tournament will take place on Friday in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. We will be there live again.
