Federal President Alexander Van der Bellen has called on Austrian residents to be disciplined in the fight against the corona virus. We must “do everything possible to avoid a second blockade,” Van der Bellen told a news conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Selenskyj in Vienna on Tuesday. A lockdown would be “extremely damaging” to the economy and employment.
“I call on all people in Austria to adhere to precautionary measures so that we can keep the pandemic under control during the next flu season,” said the 76-year-old man. Austria has so far “overcome the health crisis relatively lightly, because, I say exaggeratedly, everyone has adhered to the necessary restrictions”.
Coronavirus not yet defeated
The pandemic “is not over,” Van der Bellen warned. “Now is the time to take another deep breath for the last third of this strange marathon of the pandemic, the end of which we all long for, of course.” In relation to overcoming the economic crisis triggered by the epidemic, Van der Bellen insisted that “the restart of the economy must be oriented towards sustainability.” After all, there will “never” be a vaccine against the climate crisis.
First state guest since the Corona crisis
With Selenskyj, Van der Bellen welcomed his first state guest since the Corona crisis on Tuesday. In a joint press conference with the federal president, he thanked the federal president for the fact that, following the closure of borders in the course of the Corona crisis, Austria had also enabled a humanitarian corridor through which thousands of Ukrainians could have returned to his homeland.
