Vaccines – Virologist warns of another wave in autumn

Virologist Dorothee von Laer is already warning of a new wave of infections in the fall. Although he expects a calm summer, if variants of the coronavirus prevail during this time, in which individual vaccines do not work, there could be another wave in the fall, von Laer said Sunday on the ORF talk show “In the Center.” You have to prepare for this and plan, for example, revaccination with more effective vaccines.

Austria is currently in the third wave of infections from the pandemic. Tyrol announced Sunday night that an exit test would be mandatory for both the state and the Kufstein district. The reason for the measure, which should be applied from Wednesday, is a higher incidence of a special variant of the British virus mutation (B117-E484K).

With this variant, it is feared that vaccines will be less effective. It is an “immune escape mutant”, as von Laer put it: “This virus is no longer recognized by the antibodies we form after vaccination.” (apa)
