USA: New ceasefire attempt in Nagorno-Karabakh

It should go into effect on Monday from 8 a.m. local time (5 a.m. CET), as announced by representatives of the two countries on Sunday together with the US government.

This should implement the agreements of October 10. In recent days the fighting has continued despite diplomatic efforts. The ceasefire agreed through Russian mediation has not lasted.

The fight for Nagorno-Karabakh has been going on since the end of September. Azerbaijan lost control of the mountainous area with around 145,000 inhabitants in a war after the collapse of the Soviet Union some 30 years ago. Since 1994 there has been a fragile ceasefire. Azerbaijan may refer to its “sister state” Turkey in the conflict. Russia, in turn, is the protecting power of Armenia.
