Thiem defeats “a true champion”

06.09.2020|9.15 am|by Adrian Rehling

Thiem defeated

One was number three in the world in his prime, the other is currently breaking the Big 3 and is number three in the world. Therefore, Dominic Thiem and Marin Cilic should cause excitement at the US Open.

Before the game, the respect of the two players was palpable. Thiem said of the 2014 New York Champion: “He is underrated because he has accomplished almost everything you can achieve as a tennis player. He is definitely one of the best players of the last decade, a true champion.” Against this, the Austrian had to get perfectly into the round of 16. And he did it with 6: 2, 6: 2, 3: 6, 6: 1.

The next opponent teaches a real lesson

So far, Thiem had not shown any problems and did not have to present a set in the course of the tournament. Very different from Cilic, who had to go the entire distance in the beginning against Kudla. The direct comparison also spoke in favor of the ÖTV professional, who by then had already won both duels.

And so the game began. The first two moves together took just under an hour. Thiem was just as strong on his own serve as he was on the return – only six points were given from eight service games and two breaks were made in both rounds. 6: 2, 6: 2.

It was only in the third set that Cilic was able to break free a bit, bringing the Austrian’s serve to 4: 2 for the first time and managing to finish the set. However, the hope quickly faded, because in the fourth round only Thiem set the pace again. The result: 6: 1.

Felix Auger-Aliassime will be waiting for the round of 16 on Monday. The Canadian gave Frenchman Corentin Moutet a real lesson 6-1, 6-0, 6-4.
