Update 7.1 introduces bots as opponents for inexperienced gamers on consoles

On April 28, 2020, Update 7.1 for PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds will be released on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The update, which is now available for PC, will bring Vikendi Island back in revised form and season 7 will begin. There is an innovation compared to the PC update, namely that version 7.1 also features computer controlled bots as opponents. These AI bots are primarily intended to be used in public matches when new players or inexperienced players are immersed in real battle battles.

“As PUBG veterans continue to improve their skills, we increasingly see many new players quit prematurely and without murder, often without causing harm,” explains project manager Joon H. Choi (details). The number of bots is linked to the matchmaking ranking (MMR) and the higher the MMR value, the less chance you will find bots in the game. The new PUBG ranking system, which will launch next month, will also contain no bots.

Excerpt from Version 7.1 patch notes
“There will be additional AI opponents in public matches. The development team is aware that our players enjoy PUBG, but at the same time there are often matches where new players can’t even harm opponents.”

In order for all players to experience the core elements of PUBG (Jump, Pick Loot, Fight), which are particularly fun and can also clear up a chicken dinner, we’ve decided to add AI opponents.

With this patch, we hope that more players will be able to experience PUBG’s core gameplay, with the ratio of AI opponents to players decreasing as players become more familiar with the game. This is to help players develop their skills while experiencing the same intensity that established players already adore.

AI opponents are not yet fully implemented in this first patch. We promise, based on your feedback, to carry out constant updates and balance adjustments and analyze various data to further enhance the gaming experience in PUBG.

  • AI ratio changes based on player abilities and player search group.
    • The ratio of the number of AI opponents in the session is adjusted based on the player’s abilities and the player hunt group in the player region.
  • AI opponents can be found in all modes (Solo / Duo / Squad / 1-man Squad)
    • The player can team up with AI opponents, and AI opponents will not merge as a team, even if there is a shortage of players on the team.
  • The actions of AI opponents are restricted.
    • In essence, an AI can walk / run / sit / lie / shoot etc. It also masters actions for simple parkour movements, swimming, and object farming.
    • But we want to add more actions: bow, jump, edge grab, and use and react when throwing weapons.
  • AI opponents can achieve successes or trophies.
    • Survivor Pass, Survival Mastery and Weapon Mastery are available to prove your worth in fighting AI opponents. Then there are the successes of the platform.
  • AI opponents can be watched as watchers and in replays.
    • We had considered not showing AI while watching and replays, but in the end we decided to do it because our players, for whom everything is primarily intended, can learn from this information.
    • As soon as a player dies during a match, observation is activated and you can see real players first. And when there are no real players in the session, he watches an AI.
    • AI opponents can be seen in replays. There are some elements that may not seem good or even strange to you. We’ll fix it with constant updates. “
