Up to 70 centimeters of fresh snow: power outage in parts of eastern Tyrol

From Friday to Saturday a lot of snow fell in East Tyrol and Carinthia. In some parts of the country, the highest weather alert level applies. Until Monday it will continue to snow and rain in some places without rest.

In parts of East Tyrol and Upper Carinthia, such as Lesachtal and Upper Mölltal, snow cover increased by between 50 and 70 centimeters from Friday to Saturday. In some places there was a red weather warning and therefore higher, reported the Central Institute of Meteorology and Geodynamics. In East Tyrol, the power supply failed in some communities.

On Saturday morning, for example, there was 80 centimeters of snow in Kornat, 70 centimeters in Kötschach-Mauthen and Döllach and 60 centimeters in Mallnitz (all Kränten), Sillian and St. Jakob / Defereggen (both in East Tyrol). Meteorologists reported that it continued to snow and rain until Monday morning, especially in Upper Carinthia and East Tyrol, as well as in the area of the main Tyrolean Alpine range, sometimes with great intensity. In the mountains it snows from one and a half to three meters in some places on weekends. Storm Foehn also causes heavy snowdrifts. In places there is already a great danger of avalanches.

“The exact forecast of the amount of snow in the lowlands is difficult, since the line of snowfall varies by region and the intensity of precipitation between valleys and more than 1500 meters above sea level,” explained Gerhard Hohenwarter of the Zentralanstalt. “But it snows more in the valleys of East Tyrol and Upper Carinthia, especially in the Lesach Valley and the Upper Möll Valley. Here another 70 to 130 centimeters of fresh snow arrives on the weekend.”

Power failure in East Tyrol

As of Saturday afternoon, 500 homes in eastern Tyrol were initially without power due to falling trees on power lines during heavy snowfall. This was confirmed by a spokesperson for Tinetz-Stromnetz Tirol. Six municipalities with a total of 19 unsupervised transformer stations were affected. The authorities also announced that the Felbertauernstraße between Matrei and Mittersill will be closed for the time being from 4 pm The duration of the blockade was initially not foreseeable. Several state roads in the Lienz district also had to be closed.

The communities affected by power outages were Matrei in Osttirol, Kals am Großglockner, Ainet, Schlaiten, Nikoldsdorf and Tristach. At its peak on Saturday morning, around 3,500 homes were without power for a short time. According to spokesman Christian Ammer, most breakdowns could be resolved in half an hour.

At first, Tinetz was unable to estimate when the current faults would be resolved. This also depends on whether the affected areas can be reached in the near future. Here and there you have to deal with impassable terrain where roads are blocked. “It depends on when these streets reopen,” Ammer said. Currently, trees would easily collapse under the weight of snow masses, which in turn would pose a threat to emergency services.

Foehn storm over 100 km / h

A foehn storm is blowing at over 100 km / h in many mountains this weekend. On Saturday morning, ZAMG recorded wind peaks of up to 133 km / h in Sonnwendstein (Lower Austria, 1,500 meters above sea level), up to 126 km / h in Dachstein (Styria / Upper Austria, 2,700 meters), as well as in Hahnenkamm (Tyrol, 1,794 meters) and in Brunnenkogel (Tyrol, 3,437 meters) up to 124 km / h. “Even in the lowlands, the foehn storm is taking hold at times,” he said. In Bad Mitterndorf (Styria), 99 km / h were measured on Saturday morning, 84 km / h in Mariazell (Styria) and 75 km / h in Mondsee (Upper Austria).

Due to the heavy snow load, trees could fall onto roads, power lines, and railroad overhead lines, and avalanches could occur. Furthermore, the combination of large amounts of snow and rain on the frozen ground means that the water cannot run off and causes small-scale flooding.

On Monday, rain and snowfall in southern and western Austria will be weaker or breaks will be taken. There are still uncertainties in future development, says ZAMG meteorologist Hohnwarter: “Another low for Italy will probably develop in the middle of the week and it will snow and rain again, although not as hard as this weekend. Forecast models still they calculate the minima very differently and therefore also the effects in Austria. “
