Southern Austria receives a lot of fresh snow again this month. There is a lot of snow here >>>
This Monday, in Upper Carinthia, there are often 50 centimeters of fresh snow, even in Lienz and Villach it can reach 40 centimeters, in Klagenfurt by 20 centimeters. The special thing: the snow falls loose, flaky, at significantly negative temperatures it is fine powder snow.
As is often the case, a wet stream from the south combined with an Italian minimum is responsible for the heavy renewed snowfall. That has happened several times this winter, so East Tyrol and Upper Carinthia already have the most snow in all of Austria.
The snowfall started a little later in the morning than originally thought, but now it’s snowing heavily. In Kötschach-Mauthen, just in the last hour 7 centimeters of fresh snow have been added, in Villach a 5-centimeter layer of snow has already formed.
The current temperatures in Carinthia are impressive. The danger of intermittent rains later actually only exists in the southern Lavant valley, otherwise it’s still powder snow.
On the other hand, temperatures look different on the north side of the Alps with a foehn, here they are often measured +5 to +10 degrees. This changes in the afternoon when a cold front kills the dryer. Then, often, here too it snows into the valleys.
