The population showed a different interest on the second day of the large crown mass test. The number of infections is declining, which Anschober sees as a successful shutdown.

The second day of massive testing in much of Austria did not bring a great run at the national test stations on Saturday. The number of visitors was high in some places, for example in Graz in the morning, or too weak. Meanwhile, technical problems with the registry system appear to have been resolved. The positive rate in mass testing has been low so far. In PCR tests, a total of 3,444 new infections were reported in Austria in the last 24 hours.

In Vienna, as in Vorarlberg and Tyrol, the second day of mass testing was in progress. According to the City Councilor for Health, Peter Hacker (SPÖ), some 24,000 people had booked an appointment for today for Saturday noon. The capacity of the three Vienna stations is designed for up to 150,000 test subjects per day. Regarding free capacity, Hacker admitted that he did not expect a run in the massive tests: “Anyway, I expected very little.” The reason for this is the already very high testing density in the city: 200,000 tests were carried out in November alone. “But I admit that 25,000 a day is even less than I expected.”

According to a spokesman for the Armed Forces, there were no problems in Vienna: “Operations are running smoothly,” the APA said when asked. The computer system that had failed on Friday also returned to work. Hacker also announced the results of the PCR tests conducted over the course of the mass tests: the positive rate was 0.16 percent.

Few people willing to try in Tyrol

Tirol also started the second day of mass testing on Saturday, but initially there were only a few people willing to test. Kufstein Mayor Martin Krumschnabel was “disappointed” with the APA. On the second day there has been “very little activity” at the six test sites, and those who are willing to take the test only “come gradually”. It is “a mystery” to him why this is so. Relatively sobering things were also heard from the state capital, Innsbruck. “The influx has been low so far, poor man,” said APA Mayor Georg Willi (Greens) spokeswoman. It is simply slipping away. So far, only 2,000 people have come to the test stations. For comparison: on Friday there were 6,000 at the same time. With more than 76,000 tests as of Friday, the positive result rate was 0.3 percent.

However, Vorarlberg was satisfied with the number of tests carried out so far. By Saturday afternoon, 82,533 people had participated in the mass crown tests in Vorarlberg. 322 of the tests (0.39 percent) produced a positive result. More than 10,000 more tests were due to take place on Saturday night. Governor Markus Wallner (ÖVP) once again appealed to the population to seize the opportunity to take the test. There were almost 9,000 registrations on Sunday; the tests will take place until 5 pm tomorrow. The registration rate for the three days was 27.7 percent (95,619 people) on Saturday afternoon.

In Styria, where testing for school and kindergarten teachers began, as in five other federal states, the program got off to a smooth start. Harald Eitner, head of Styria’s department for disaster control, said that the electronic record had worked, it was a good test for mass tests for the population next weekend. Before the tests began in Krampustag, around 700 Styrian helpers were tested for Covid-19, all negative.

Armed forces working hard

The armed forces began testing staff at schools and kindergartens in Lower Austria on Saturday. About 900 soldiers and armed forces officials were deployed together with volunteers and paramedics from rescue organizations to 29 locations with a total of 71 test trails, the armed forces announced on Saturday. As of Saturday morning, 24,730 of the around 36,000 school and kindergarten employees had signed up for an exam.

The evaluation of school and kindergarten staff in Lower and Upper Austria, Burgenland, Carinthia and Salzburg has also started. No problems were reported anywhere, although the rush was quick at times. In Lower Austria, for example, two-thirds of the 36,000 school and kindergarten employees were registered, and in Upper Austria, 27,000 of the total 38,000. Carinthia reported up to 3,000 proven education sector employees, with 6,500 registrations. In theory, 13,000 employees could attend the tests. In Burgenland, 7,000 of the 8,000 school and kindergarten employees have registered.

Accordingly, Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner (ÖVP) prepared an interim assessment of the evidence co-organized by the armed forces. “Some 200,000 people have already been tested and hundreds of people have positive antigen tests,” he said. Hundreds of chains of infection have already been broken because people who were unaware of their infection were tested.

PCR test relief for positives

However, many of those who tested positive in mass tests should soon be able to breathe a sigh of relief. Because, as MedUni Vienna Vice Chancellor Oswald Wagner explained early Saturday in an interview with the APA, up to 50 percent of them could be relieved by the most accurate PCR test. However, Wagner considers quick tests to be absolutely sensible and not only advocates replay, but wants to increase participation through discounts.

Wagner also supports SPÖ boss Pamela Rendi-Wagner’s push for crown home testing. In a written statement, he argued that Austrians should test themselves twice a week in the future. The necessary materials for this should be available free of charge. Extension is possible first through antigen testing and then through “very easy to use” paper strip tests. This new test option, which is very easy to use for lay people, is about to be approved: “It’s inexpensive, easy to use and delivers the result quickly.” The government will be asked to purchase these new tests in very large quantities as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, the number of those infected with the coronavirus in Austria surpassed the 300,000 mark on Saturday. Since the beginning of the pandemic, SARS-CoV-2 has been detected 300,689 times in people in Austria. According to figures from the Ministry of the Interior and the Ministry of Health, 3,444 new infections were added in the last 24 hours. So far 3,757 people have died from the corona virus or the corona virus in Austria and 249,441 have recovered.

The blockade was successful

Health Minister Rudolf Anschober (Greens) assessed the decline in values as evidence that Lockown is working. The number of active cases fell by 23 percent in the past seven days, the number of hospitalizations by almost 10 percent, and the number of people in intensive care by six percent. Anchober pointed out, however, that “shopping days and vacations … after the closure of the confinement are a risk.” He called for continued care and adherence to basic rules: minimum distance, protection of the mouth and nose and avoiding crowds.
