Ukraine conflict: UN demands immediate end to Russian “occupation” of Crimea

The conflict over Crimea has been going on for years. The reason for this is also the strategically good location of the Black Sea peninsula. During the Crimean crisis, Russia annexed the area in 2014. Since then, Crimea’s membership of international law has been controversial. Now the issue was on the United Nations (UN) agenda.

The UN has called on Russia to withdraw from Crimea immediately. Moscow must immediately end the “temporary occupation of Ukrainian territory” and withdraw all soldiers and weapons from the peninsula, it said in a resolution passed by the UN General Assembly.

The vote took place at the initiative of some 40 countries, including Germany, France, the United States and the Baltic countries. 63 countries voted in favor of the non-binding resolution, 17 member states voted against and another 62 abstained.

Russia accepted Crimea on its own territory in March 2014 after a referendum that was not recognized by Ukraine and the West. Since then, Moscow has practically controlled the peninsula. The government of Kiev and the West speak of an annexation that is contrary to international law and continues to consider Crimea as part of Ukraine.
